Dental specialty studying the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the tissues that support the teeth bodies: the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum and the alveolar bone, for health maintenance, function and aesthetics of the teeth and adjacent tissues.
Major periodontal diseases affecting dentition are periodontitis and gingivitis.
Periodontal disease manifests as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gums without affecting bone) or periodontitis, where bone destruction occurs which supports the tooth. If not treated in time can lead to tooth loss.
A periodontal treatment involves correction from hygiene technique for controlling plaque, to the elimination of the triggers of the same (calculus or tartar dental and periodontal pockets).
